Your Google Foundation Is Now Your AI Foundation

By Higher Information Group on July 8, 2026 | Marketing Solutions

If you set up your Google Business Profile a few years ago and haven't touched it since, this post is for you!

We’ve written before about why your Google Business Profile matters and why reviews are one of your most powerful marketing tools. Those posts still hold up. But something significant has shifted, and if you’re not paying attention, your competitors probably are.

The way people find local businesses has fundamentally changed. And if your digital foundation isn’t solid, you’re not just invisible on Google. You’re probably invisible everywhere.

Google Looks Different Now

When someone searches for a roofer, an attorney, a plumber, or a dentist today, they don’t always see a list of links and a map. Users no longer just see a list of links. At the top of the screen, they now see AI-generated summaries, quick answers, and personalized results, before they ever click on a website.

Research published in late 2025 found that AI Overviews appear on approximately 15% of all Google searches, up from roughly 6% in early 2024. For local commercial queries like “best dentist near me” or “HVAC repair near me”, appear on roughly 20% of searches.

That number is growing every quarter. And here’s the part that matters most for your business: when an AI Overview appears at the top of a results page, it compresses what used to be a list of ten organic links and a map pack into a single synthesized answer with two or three cited sources. The businesses cited get visibility. The businesses not cited lose traffic, even if they rank in position one organically.

AI and Google Are Reading from the Same Playbook

There’s a common misconception that AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s Gemini are somehow separate from traditional search. They’re not – at least not when it comes to how they evaluate your business.

Google AI Overviews draw from Google’s own index. All of these systems are pulling from the same underlying web, the same directories, the same review platforms, the same content. A business with clean structured data, consistent NAP, strong authority signals, and fresh content will perform better across all of them simultaneously.

In other words: the work you do to strengthen your Google presence is the same work that makes you visible to AI. There’s no shortcut around the foundation.

What “Foundation” Actually Means in 2026

So, what does a strong digital foundation look like today? It’s not just about having a profile. Google Business Profile has evolved far beyond a simple directory listing. In 2026, it functions as an AI-powered marketing hub that shapes how customers find, evaluate, and choose your business, with Gemini-powered features and tighter enforcement policies meaning a well-optimized profile directly determines your local search visibility.

Here’s what that foundation is built on:

1. A Complete, Accurate Profile

Profiles filled out entirely receive 70% more visits and appear 18 times more often in search results. Leaving any field blank tells Google — and potential customers — that your business might not be reliable.

2. Consistent Information Everywhere

Your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) should be consistent across your Google Business Profile, your website, and other trusted sources such as Facebook, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and relevant online directories. Inconsistencies confuse Google’s algorithms and can quietly damage your rankings without you ever knowing why.

3. Reviews — Quantity, Quality, and Recency

For local pack and Maps rankings, reviews now outweigh traditional backlinks. They directly influence both rankings and click-through rates, with review count, recency, and content relevance ranking among the top local signals.

And remember: consistency matters just as much as volume. A steady stream of genuine reviews signals that a business is active and relevant. Large spikes followed by long periods of silence are less persuasive.

4. Active Profile Management: Not “Set It and Forget It”

If you own a local business, your Google Business Profile is one of the most important parts of your online presence. But in 2026, it’s not something you can simply set up once and ignore. Google has become stricter about reviews, verification, profile accuracy, and spam prevention.

Weekly posts, fresh photos, and review responses signal to Google’s AI that your business is active and trustworthy, directly improving your local search visibility.

5. Your Website and Profile Working Together

Your Google profile helps people find you quickly. Your website helps people understand you more deeply. A strong Google Business Profile can bring visibility, calls, directions, reviews, and clicks, but your website gives you more control over your message, services, and contact path. The two should work together. Your Google profile should lead people to a website that confirms they are in the right place.

The Cost of Doing Nothing

More than 35% of consumers have already used an AI tool to find a local business or service. Yet 88% of local businesses have no active strategy to appear in AI search results. That gap between how customers are searching and how businesses are optimizing represents the defining local marketing opportunity of 2026.

Local search didn’t stop working, it got more selective. Brands that compete on clarity, consistency, and trust are the ones AI surfaces and consumers choose. Brands that treat their Google Business Profile as a static listing may be watching their visibility erode while competitors get picked.

The businesses showing up at the top right now aren’t necessarily the best in their market. They’re the ones who treated their digital foundation as an ongoing priority rather than a one-time task.

Where Do You Start?

If it’s been more than a year since you’ve reviewed your Google Business Profile, start there. Check that your:

  • Business name, address, phone, and hours are accurate
  • Categories accurately reflect what you do
  • Photos are recent and professional
  • Services and business description are filled out completely
  • You’re responding to reviews — including the negative ones
  • You’re posting updates consistently

Not sure where you stand? We help local businesses audit and optimize their digital presence so they can show up — on Google and in AI-powered search.
