If Your Business Website is ADA Compliant, You May Be Eligible for Tax Credits

By Higher Information Group on June 22, 2023 | Marketing Solutions

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines ensure that companies and other organizations cannot discriminate against disabled individuals. These guidelines also extend to business websites and typically include making sure things like navigation, fonts, and colors are suited to the needs of everyone or that there is a reasonable way to get the same information without having to view your website.

ADA Tax Credit

When you make your website inclusive for all users, you also become eligible for tax credits. The ADA provides a Disabled Access Credit to businesses that incur expenses related to removing barriers and complying with ADA regulations. This credit is worth up to 50% of eligible accessibility expenditures. By taking advantage of this, you can not only improve your business’s accessibility but also save money and potentially increase your customer base.

The great news is that the ADA tax credit can be applied for and earned on an annual basis! Although, expenditures may not be carried over from the previous year to claim a credit that exceeded the expenditure limit from the year before. But, if the credit amount you’re entitled to exceed the taxes you owe, you are allowed to roll the unused portion of the credit forward into the next year.

Applying for the ADA Tax Credit

Before applying for the tax credit, be sure your business is eligible. Please refer to the Tax Incentives for Improving Accessibility Fact Sheet, which provides all the information you’ll need.

Once you’ve confirmed that you are eligible for the tax credit, you will need to complete Form 8826 to apply. You can find this form on the IRS government website. You can also read more on the Tax Credits and Deductions page on the ADA website. Of course, always check with your qualified tax professional for details on your specific situation.
